It’s some kind of insane reference to the Utena anime which is about swordfighting lesbians or something like that, and the dude on the left must be gryffindor, since that was his sword (The other being zed’s sword)
It is all insane but internally consistent. You have to admire that.

I only say this because I know HK can be an arse about realistic body position, so I hope he’d appreciate this.
The way Luna and Hermione are charging each other is all wrong for western sword fighters. Thin swords like that were not designed to be swung from the shoulder or elbow like that, if they were they’d be thicker so the blade could better absorb high intensity impact. Rapier style swords are thin because they’re supposed to be fast. What they’re both doing in the last panel would be considered “attack in preparation” and is a very good way to move if you don’t want to have a right arm anymore. If they wanted to do it right (the panel does look awesome as it is) they’d lunge with their attacking arm mostly outstretched and cut by snapping the wrist and arm.
Oh, and if a western sword fighter shouted anything when they lunged it be more like a “HEP!” or a “BO!” than a “HIYA!”

Then again, until a few panels ago, they were using a Katana, and who knows what they trained with/ who they magically downloaded their skills from. And the actual swords look more like a broadsword rapier and a cavalry sabre…

Carnie, you’re watching women who are using swords that are sheathed in a sex-doll’s heart, swords that extend some twelve or more feet during a backhand swing, swords that have cut an entire RV truck in half vertically *and* horizontally, and you’re worried that these blades might snap if they aren’t used for thrusting?
Sure, it looks like they’re both going cleave each other (using the other arm for more momentum since they can’t plant the other leg in a lunge), but I suspect two witches who know swordfighting *and* magic might have unusual techniques that don’t work for mundane people.
Hell, the fact that they’re both trying the same “surprise” maneuver just goes to show they both learned at the same rose-filled private garden at school.
I’d rather ask why a Nordic-looking master wizard like Griffindor would use something as light as a sabre for his favourite sword.

Well Moses, like I said, I said it because I know HK can be an arse about realistic position, so much so that he made note of Chang’s incorrect position in his critique of that fight scene. Clearly he can appreciate how a Chinese chick would handle a blade, but not all of us know how a classically trained Brit would.
And the move isn’t necessarily a thrust, though those blades are also made to thrust. They would attack with cuts, which are a different movement than slashes, what they’re doing. A cut is like a flick, a snapping motion, like you would use with a racquetball racket, or whip. You would strike with enough force to pierce the skull or rib cage but you don’t want a full follow through because you wouldn’t want your blade wedged in your opponent’s corpse (or in Luna’s case, a car door) while her friends cross sectioned you. This would be all the more important if they were super-magic-powered swords because you wouldn’t need to swing from the shoulder to atomize your opponent.
As far as the blades go, if they were cavalry sabers or broadswords the same style holds, more so for sabers (sabres if you’re speaking the king’s English). You can tell from the designs. See how they have those big bells, the metal guard around the handle? Those are like your shield, and you wouldn’t have a shield positioned positioned six inches behind your exposed head like Luna has, that would be silly. Your shield would be out front, ready to deflect blows.
Last, look at their distance from each other. If you rotated Hermione’s blade 180 degrees, even with her elbow bent that far back, the tip of the blade would still be 6 inches through Luna’s face. Rotate Luna’s blade a little more than 90 degrees and her weapon would be halfway through Hermione’s wrist. With those weapons at that distance, if either of them were doing it right, they’d fatally cut their opponent 4 times before they could slash once. I know we don’t know much about their training background, but we do know Hermione must have some experience in wand dueling, which at least in the movies is molded after European fencing. She could probably adapt if she wanted to.

Put it down to standard exaggeration-of-movement for dramatic effect, then; classical fencing wouldn’t look as exiting on the page as Conan-style tree-felling swings.
Or maybe they’re just pissed off, like Anakin Skywalker taking that baseball home-run shot at Count Dooku on the steps in Revenge of the Sith…
Or, since both are witches with regenerative spells, it’s like Highlander, and both are trying for a decapitation or bisection power shot, as anything less won’t stop the fight…

You know, this is my fault. Really. It happens every time I check the site after finally getting out of the habit and leaving it alone for a few months: There’s this huge backlog of stuff I need to catch up on, frequently including a neato site-rebuild, that’s apparently been kept up for several weeks in a truly impressive and respectable fashion.
