Most older cultures leave suicide as a penance or atonement.
Christian taboo against it is quite new.

Seppuku is the name for the very particualr ritual suicide of the Samurai class. Koreans and Chinese usually drank poison, though the military class often used their swords, hence the famous Jap. version.

Ancient Romans prefered mustal stabbing or cutting the wrists after a bath.

Wait, isn’t seppuku a Japanese only thing? I always that it was like a cultural Darwin thing, you know, that way each culture has or getting rid of the stupid or less able members of its society. Like getting killed in a bar fight is to the Celts and dieing in a car accident while lighting a cigarette is to the French? Course here in the States death of the lesser endowed is normally preceded by “Hey, now watch this” followed by some asshole losing his nuts to a golf ball washer or shooting a 500 lbs limb off a cactus only to have it fall on them.
