Brick-a-bricks? My grandma always made it sound more like “brick-a-brack”. I never did like that word.

And “Hey!” - I use a mac, too. And I have a PC. And a linux machine. And a Play Station. I can also program my VCR, Commodore 64, microwave, and coffee maker. My mac is purple. But that’s no reflection of the taste. I’m not about to taste my coffee maker or microwave, they’re kinda dirty, but they do their jobs well. I’ll get back to you on the VCR and C64.

koreans have wider eyes and the best looking legs. The people in the 2nd panel are viets or something…

    sibbie | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 9:32 am | #

    and it’s bric-a-brac, in fact.

    orange144 | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 9:51 am | #

I think you inadvertently drew Carrot Top in the 3rd panel there, HS Kim (HS Kim… Sounds like the name of a ship… In all likelihood one that ferries indentured servants and illegal aliens to the New World).

We only have a miseducation system here in the US, now with more conformity! I can say that because I’ve been out of the public education system for… 13 years now.

    Damn, I’m old.

I’ve wondered this throughout most my life. Thank you, for having enlighten me Master Hyung.

More kimchi! More kimchi! (with a garnish of satan!)

Wait a minute…there wasn’t a Crazy Kimchi banner for this one!

    Neo Kojiro | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 12:09 pm | #

It’s not Carrot Top, it’s Larry from the Three Stooges.

And I’m having a lot of trouble imagining Sailor Moon with slit eyes, buck teeth and a pug nose going “Ching chong ching”…

I love this one! Send him off to read Wolf and Cub if he wants more Japanese looking characters.

You can’t blame your own ignorance and complacency on Public Education. Go to the fargin’ Public Library and read! Go out and learn from life. Get off of your duff and do something!

problem with people uneducated is the difficulty of meeting people. Farm boys from kansas aren’t going to see a lot of asian people walk by their door. they only see asian people in 24 hour dry cleaning or chinese food shops

also, the nose is really weird

    sibbie | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 2:40 pm | #

What about TV?!? The wondrous miracles of television bring the world together and making it a smaller place for us all to live in? What else can destroy diversity, culture, thought, and all manner of tastefulness like television can?!? Why, if television can’t numb one to the plethora of various splendors and violences of this world, what the heck is it good for?! Farm boys must watch TV too, right? By golly, if there are peoples out there lacking such a thing a basic television privileges, then I think someone ought to notify the President or Tom Delay about this! They’ll do sumthing about it for sure! No farm boy left behind! He’ll make a tax deduction for it, or sum such thing.

Besides, you can’t trust Chinese restaurants in Kansas, they’ll give all of asia a bad rep.

the white guy stereo-type-close-up-guy looks like he should be starring in a film wih Richard Pryor…

Freakin’ finally. No one has ever offered a good explanation for why anime chicks look like european whites………wait a sec…what european white has eyes the size of oranges and a waist that couldn’t support the weight of her arms…let alone her gravity defying hairdo and *ahem* endowments. I say all’s fair in love and animation

    Cid | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 7:17 pm | #

Cid in Spanish means Lord right?

Anyways, I think the reason why chicks in anime look like white europeans are because German soldiers who were left in Japan after WWII decided to get it on with the Asian women. So they got the white thang going on in anime girls. Wide eyes and thin waists? I blame it all on hiroshima and the lack of kimchi. Kimuchi my ass, kimchi fo life

    sibbie | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 7:48 pm | #

Um, actually, I can offer a perfectly valid reason why they look American. Osama Tezuka was convinced that the Western lifestyle was at the forefront of a wave, and so he emulated their “look” in his manga - bigger eyes being the most noticable trait. That’s why lots of people say his art looks like older Disney stuff - that’s basically the look he was going for (except at the time, it wasn’t “older”). Since he is basically the father of anime, everything after that used his example as a precedent.

Also, there’s a certain air of it that makes characters exotic. It’s the same reason why so many American artists now insert a shit-ton of Japanese characters into their comics…

Hahaha god that sounded so elitist. Oh, well.

Finally, an explanation for “Sailor Moon” that makes sense.

Wait, what am I saying?? “Sailor Moon” will never make sense.

    RantinAn | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 9:15 pm | #

He looks more laotian in the second panel than vietnamese. Vietnamese tend to have heart-shaped faces(I know, there were a lot of vietnamese and korean kids at my school.)

Way too tan to be korean. Most koreans I know have paler skin than a lot of caucasians.

    Regault | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 9:15 pm | #

Since when is Sailor Moon anything but softcore anime porn?

Besides which, who the hell thinks that much about Sailor Moon?

I suggest anyone finding themselves thinking about that for more then five minutes max go get a new hobby.

    ArcaneFire | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 9:52 pm | #

No, that would be Love Hina.

RantinAn, they are there, but only on Children’s TV. Have a flick through the children’s times on the ABC and you’ll see them.

Otherwise, the only one of prominence is the news reader on SBS. Even another one on SBS (used to intro the SBS movies years ago) has gone off, writes books now.

    Anime characters look grey.
    .
    .
    .
Y’know, “grey”, as in those skinny hydrocephalic bug-eyed anal-probing alien dudes…

    [/i got nuttin']

    PsychoKick | Email | Homepage | 07.08.03 - 11:39 pm | #

RantinAn, how about Neighbours or Secret Life of Us? They both have Asian characters.

Not that I watch Neighbours you understand…

    Cristian | Email | Homepage | 07.09.03 - 12:49 am | #

    >Yes, that’s IT! Gene Wilder! Couldn’t place my finger on the honky until now.

    >He looks more laotian in the second panel than vietnamese.

You’ll note, to Koreans the Asian caricature looks Vietmin or Latoian (ie other Asians, not them) while Caucasians see the “white” man caricature as the Jewish sterotype, not themselves…

There’s a lesson and a half-hour after school TV special in there somewhere.

From a purely practical perspective, lighter colours contrast better against the black ink outlines. Simple hairstyles can easily accomodate any colour, but for the more complex hairstyles, dark colours will blend with the black outlines and thus obscure the hair’s contours and other fine details.

Has Mickey Rooney ever apologized for that? He’s so going to hell for ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ - and if not, then ‘Black Stallion’ sealed his doom…

Just to recap: the Koreans think the Hyung close-up picture looks more Chinese, and the whites think the white guy close-up makes him look Jewish.

Not that anyone’s gonna read this, but just so you know.
